Everybody loves a party. The celebration is how we honor the best moments of life. Yet beyond the fun of snagging that pretty dress from our favorite boutique or dancing into the night with our dearest friends at an electrifying event, a pretty dope phenomenon is happening in our heads as we celebrate.

A pretty cool neurotransmitter brain thingy that tickles our pleasure centers flooding us with feelings of well being and satisfaction. What is super cool is that researchers have found that our anticipation of reward stimulates the pleasure zones much higher than the actual reward itself. Surprising right?! So what does this mean in silly simple terms? Our brains love all the sensations of celebration, but the anticipation of a party-worthy big victory is what our brains truly crave. In other words, our minds are hard-wired for winning. And to make it clear it is not just the big win itself but the seeking, the pressure or the desire to win that dopamine triggers new studies have shown. 

With this in mind, it can be said that failure produces learning while winning produces more winning. The anticipation of reward motivates behaviors to produce more success because it activates our need to seek. By increasing outcome focused behaviors we create more results.

The “celebration” seeking system can be addictive. It’s the sneaky culprit behind so many addictive behaviors including our overindulgence in social media and information hoarding. Creating a balance between seeking and sharing sets us up for truly abundant rewards. Sharing helps us deny preoccupation with activities that steal important time from our day. The desire to hit specific goals should never cost us our connection to our faith, intimate bonds with family or loyal ties to our deepest values.
